Mesopotamia Social Classes

Here, we are talking about the slaves and commoners. They were the weakest and lowest social class in the Mesopotamian society. The higher end of the lower class worked as farmers, small shop keepers, etc. About 85% of all the commoners worked as farmers, for farming was very important. The commoners were paid, even by the king. They worked a lot harder to get their money's worth, though. The commoners had some jewelry and homes, but not big and fancy.

Commoners had close family ties, and they never were educated. However, being in one of the lowest classes in society were good for some people. The women had close to equal rights with the men because, being in the lower class, many men didn't have a lot of rights to begin with.

Slaves, on the other hand, had no rights. They could be controlled by any class higher than them. Slaves were treated well, for the most part. They all had a specific haircut you could recognize them by.

Slaves could be obtained by someone, instead of money if a relative owes a debt. You could also get them because they couldn't pay taxes or were prisoners of war. It didn't matter what color of skin you had, because in Mesopotamia they all had the same shade.
